What is an MRI Scan?
Magnetic reasonance imaging or MRI scans use magnetic and radio waves to create images of internal tissues as an alternative to X-rays or other forms of radiation.
MRI scans provide good contrast between the different soft tissues of the body, which makes them especially useful in imaging the brain, muscles, heart and cancers.
Benefits of having an MRI scan at Bupa Cromwell Hospital
We have just installed the UK's first private 'ambient experience' MRI Scanner. The new scanner has a number of design features making the scan faster and more comfortable for patients.
Although one of the most common imaging examinations, MRI can present a challenge for many people mainly due to the noise and claustrophobic nature of the equipment. The upgraded technology looks set to change this.
The recently installed Philips Ingenia 1.5T MRI scanner features:
-
an in-built ambient experience enabling you to choose your own music, lighting and wall images, designed to have a calming effect and possibly eliminate the need for a general anaesthetic for children
-
30 percent reduction in scan time compared to conventional machines
- a wider space (bore) to pass through – combining greater comfort and high image quality
Why should I consider having an MRI?
You may wish to have an MRI scan if you are:
- having a Bupa Cromwell Hospital health assessment which includes an MRI scan as part of the programme
- if your GP or consultant believes it will provide information which will aid in the diagnosis of your potential condition.
You may not be suitable for an MRI scan if you have:
- electrical appliances such as ear implants
- implantable cardioverter
- defibrillator or pacemaker
- surgical clips or other metal in your body (artificial hips or bone screws are generally not a problem)
