The PET/CT department is an integral part of our large medical and surgical centre, focused on providing patients with a high quality of care and led by a skilled and professional team.
What is PET/CT?
PET (positron emission tomography) is a specialised diagnostic scan that is used for detecting, staging and monitoring many types of cancers. Before the PET scan the patient is injected with a radioactive isotope. This takes about an hour to travel around the body and accumulates in abnormal cells. The PET scanner is then used to detect the radiation from the isotope. The result is an excellent image of miniscule changes in the body’s metabolism caused by the growth of abnormal cells.
PET/CT involves the PET scan being enhanced by a CT (computed tomography) scan. The PET scan detects the cancer and the CT scan pinpoints its exact location, size and shape. The result is that clinicians can detect the cancer earlier, determine its size and then either plan or assess the response to treatment.
Benefits of our Philips Gemini TF Scanner
Our PET/CT scanner has the latest 'Time of Flight' (TF) technology using very sensitive detectors that are not available on most other systems.
This technology:
• gives images of the highest quality, generated in the shortest scan time possible
• enhances the contrast of the image
• helps to achieve consistently high-quality images regardless of the patient’s size
We also have the facility to do paediatric scans and, if needed, we can scan patients under general anaesthetic.
A friendly and reassuring environment for patients
At Bupa Cromwell Hospital patients will find a warm and friendly service in a pleasant and comfortable environment. They can also expect:
• their own private room for resting prior to the scan
• an experienced team who will take time to explain the procedure and answer any queries
• a comfortable waiting area with facilities for relatives and friends
Our team members are very understanding of patients’ specific needs or anxieties and work hard to offer reassurance in a relaxed environment.
The open design of the scanner and the shorter scan time are particularly beneficial for patients who may have claustrophobia.
