This specialty provides information about the functions of the nervous system.
Neurophysiological techniques enable the diagnosis of neurological disorders and other medical conditions in both children and adults.
Benefits of neurophysiology at Bupa Cromwell Hospital
Our team of specialists work with the very latest instruments to provide accurate diagnoses of neurophysiological conditions. The wealth of experience within the team ensures fast and efficient processing of tests and reports, and patients receive the highest quality expedient service in one location.
What does neurophysiology involve?
The detection and analysis of electrical signals produced by the nervous system which give access to the functions of the brain; spinal cord and roots; peripheral nerves and muscles. Physiological tests include:
Electrocephalogram or EEG
An EEG records the electrical activity produced by the brain to help in the diagnosis and treatments of patients who have or may have:
- dementia
- encephalitis
- epilepsy
An EEG is also used to determine the cause of coma.
Electromyography or EMG
EMG records the electrical activity from the muscles at rest or during voluntary contractions. EMGs can give valuable information about the nature of the underlying disease process and can discriminate between weaknesses due to problems with the nerves supplying the muscles and primary muscle disease.
Nerve conduction studies or NCS
Peripheral nerves are directly stimulated and the response is measured using skin electrodes placed over the nerve at different sites, or over a muscle related to that nerve.
Evoked potential studies or EPS
This refers to the recording of electrical responses arising from generators located within the central nervous system. These are measured by placing electrodes over the skin at sites which correspond to the spinal cord, brainstem and brain.
Polysomnography with continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP
This is used to assess sleep disorders such as:
- excessive daytime sleepiness
- hypersomnia or increased duration or depth of sleep at night
- narcolepsy or inappropriate irresistible daytime sleeping
- sleep apnoea or the cessation of breathing for longer than ten seconds.
Results of assessment or treatment
Results are reported to your doctor in two or three days. In some cases, if the patient’s booking coincides with the day on which a consultant is in the hospital, the report can be provided on the same day.
