Drug treatment

At the Bupa Cromwell Hospital Weight Management Centre, our aim is to help people who are dealing with excess weight.

prescription bag for medication

Drug treatment is generally suitable for patients who have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 30 with no other medical conditions, or those who have a BMI greater than 27 and one or more medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes.

Our team includes a highly experienced metabolic physician who can advise each patient on whether drug treatment would be a suitable option.

One type of medication is taken with meals and stops the digestion of around 30 percent of the fat in your diet. By absorbing fewer calories you lose weight. It works best when used regularly and in conjunction with daily exercise and a reduced calorie diet. Other types of medication work on reducing appetite.

What if I need further treatment?

The weight loss management clinic is linked with multidisciplinary teams throughout the hospital and can refer to you other services you may need after treatment including:

  • plastic surgery

  • physiotherapy

  • endocrinology and diabetes

  • sleep apnoea clinic

  • well woman clinic
