Introducing UK's first virtual theatre MRI

Bupa Cromwell Hospital introduces ‘virtual theatre’ MRI

 01 November 2011

Uncomfortable MRI scans are set to become a thing of the past. The UK’s first MRI scanner with ambient audiovisual technology has been installed at Bupa Cromwell Hospital.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a type of scan that is often used to diagnose health conditions affecting organs, bones and tissue. However, MRI scans can be both frightening and disorientating, particularly due to the noise and claustrophobic nature of the equipment.

Ambient mri scanner

The Ingenia 1.5T MRI Scanner at Bupa Cromwell Hospital is designed to create a calming atmosphere. Ambient lighting is used to transform the scanning room into a multi-dimensional theatre, where music plays and images and light are projected onto the scanner’s circular walls. People can choose the music, colours and images they prefer.

The scanner reduces scan times by up to 30 percent and because patients pass through a larger space than used in a traditional MRI, the experience is less claustrophobic.

Mr Paul Montgomery, medical director, Bupa Cromwell Hospital, said:

“At Bupa Cromwell Hospital, we’re passionate about the standard of care we provide for every patient. Our new MRI scanner makes the experience of having an MRI far more comfortable. It reinforces our commitment to providing the most effective and highest quality healthcare for patients through investment in state-of-the-art equipment.”
