Leaving hospital

After treatment, you will be taken to the recovery area and when you’re feeling a bit better, back to your room.

The nurses will monitor you and let you know when you can eat and drink, and get out of bed.

Your nursing team will talk to you about your general care and answer any questions you may have.

You might be seen by some of our specialist staff, such as the wound care nurse or someone from the dietetics or therapy teams. You can talk to your consultant or nurse about this.

Your consultant and the nursing staff will decide when it is right for you to go home, and will keep a close eye on your progress.

They will also talk to you about ongoing care and any necessary follow-up appointments.

If you have any questions about your aftercare, please ask your nurse before leaving the hospital. Any medication will be prepared for you by the pharmacy team who will explain how and when to take it.

A member of the nursing team will call you at home within 48 hours of discharge to check on your progress.

Transport

You should arrange for someone to take you home, and if taking a taxi you should have a friend or relative with you. If you are unsure about this, contact your consultant’s secretary.

Billing

We will contact you at home with details of any outstanding charges. Alternatively you can speak to them before you leave if you have any questions.

Concerns

If you have any concerns about your health once back home, please contact the ward or your consultant. If the situation is urgent you should go to your nearest Accident and Emergency department.
