Surgery is often used to treat breast cancer.

There are many types of breast surgery available. Your surgeon will use different treatments depending on the type and size of cancer and where it is in the breast.

What types of breast cancer surgery are available at Bupa Cromwell Hospital?

A biopsy involves taking a tissue sample from a lump. Our on-site laboratory analyses the samples for accurate and fast results.


A mastectomy is an operation where the breast is removed to treat breast cancer. It can also be used to reduce the risk of breast cancer developing. You may you may see this referred to as a 'prophylactic mastectomy' or 'preventative mastectomy'

Breast reconstruction

Following a mastectomy, you may choose to have your breast reconstructed. This involves implanting an artificial breast to replace the one that has been removed. For information regarding breast augmentation and reduction surgery, please see our  plastic surgery page.
