Childrens surgery

Our Skyline children-only ward provides a caring and secure environment for children and young people who need surgery.

We have advanced clinical facilities for simple and complex medical and surgical procedures and a wide range of supporting treatments and therapies.

Our Skyline Ward has 14 en-suite bedrooms as well as a daycare area with toys and activities. Our play specialist uses creative ways to prepare children for their procedure and encourages them to talk about any concerns they may have.

The Rainbow operating theatre is attached to the Skyline Ward so children and young people don’t have to come into contact with the main hospital. Parents can accompany their child until they have their anaesthetic and then see them again in the recovery area.

The Skyline team which includes surgeons, nurses, therapists, dietitians and play specialists are dedicated to looking after both the emotional and physical needs of the children and young people they treat.

Conditions we treat

We treat a wide variety of congenital and acquired conditions including:

  • appendectomies

  • skin and neck lumps

  • testicular tumours

  • squint

  • inguinal hernia and hydrocoeles

  • gastro-oesophageal reflux

  • circumcision

  • undescended testes

Minimal-access surgery

We provide some procedures using minimal access surgical techniques which allow a shorter hospital stay and faster post-operative recovery period for your child.

As part of our admissions assessment we are careful to only admit children to our Skyline Ward when we are sure we can meet their needs safely. As the only private paediatric department which has a resident consultant paediatric intensivist we are confident that, if any of our children deteriorate, our high level clinicians will be able to stabilise the child quickly and decide the most appropriate place for their ongoing care.

Given we do not have a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) on-site we may need to transfer your child to a PICU at another hospital including the NHS. For your reassurance, having a high level senior clinician on-site rather than on-call ensures your child is safe and attended to immediately.
