Meningitis B vaccination

Meningitis B vaccination

Meningitis B

Meningitis B (Men B) is the most common cause of bacterial meningitis in the UK, and meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia are the leading infectious cause of death for children under five.

Babies are at the highest risk, with 22 cases per 100,000, and this reduces to 5 cases per 100,000 for children aged 1-4*. Vaccination is the only way to prevent Men B, but the NHS only offers this for babies up to one year old.

If your child doesn’t meet the NHS criteria, or if you would prefer to use a private healthcare provider, we offer Men B vaccination and will look after you and your child every step of the way. The full course of Men B immunisation includes three injections over a 6 month period, and anyone can access the service on a 'self pay' basis.

As with any paediatric vaccination, appointments can be booked at short notice and there's a choice of seeing a Consultant Paediatrician, or using the nurse-led Immunisation Clinic.

Please note that we do not provide a paediatric intensive care unit at Bupa Cromwell Hospital. However, any deteriorating child will be quickly assessed and stabilised by a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) trained in paediatric intensive care, supported by an on-call Paediatric Intensive Care Consultant, before being transferred to the most appropriate paediatric intensive care provider by the Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS).
