Children's physiotherapy

Paediatric Physiotherapy

Childrens physiotherapy

Children's physiotherapy helps restore, and where possible, improve movement and function when a child is affected by injury, illness or delayed development.

Benefit of Children's physiotherapy at Bupa Cromwell Hospital?

At Bupa Cromwell Hospital, our paediatric physiotherapists provide specialised therapy for all children from birth up to 18 years of age, whose parents have concerns about their wellbeing and physical development. Our team provides the highest standard of assessment and care for children who have:

  • physical difficulties in keeping up with their  peers or appear clumsy and fall frequently
  • neuromuscular problems that affect their mobility and movement
  • injuries and imbalances of the musculoskeletal system
  • respiratory conditions
  • had surgery or will have surgery.

We also provide physiotherapy for premature and full-term babies with delayed physical development.

What will physiotherapy involve?

Each child has an initial assessment lasting about an hour.  Fun activities and age toys are used to make sessions enjoyable for you and your child. Our therapists are Bobath trained and work exclusively with children. The therapist will discuss the immediate and long term needs of your child with you to make a tailored treatment programme, which may include:

  • muscle strengthening and stretching
  • posture, gait and balance training
  • improving  movement patterns
  • promoting development and balance
  • training, advice and support for parents and carers
  • coaching parents in massage for infants to promote bonding, development and wellbeing
  • neurological rehabilitation
  • provision of specialist equipment

Our major aim is to help parents to understand their child’s therapy needs and to feel confident in addressing these in the child’s daily life at home. Parents and children are welcome to come back for an update to support their progress towards the agreed goals.

Appointments to suit you

Appointments are arranged to suit you and your family. The initial appointment lasts about an hour and subsequent appointments may vary in length depending on your child’s agreed treatment plan.

Access to treatment

We accept referrals from parents who may be concerned about a particular aspect of their child’s movement or physical development, your child’s GP, paediatrician or school.

Please note that we do not provide a paediatric intensive care unit at Bupa Cromwell Hospital. However, any deteriorating child will be quickly assessed and stabilised by a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) trained in paediatric intensive care, supported by an on-call Paediatric Intensive Care Consultant, before being transferred to the most appropriate paediatric intensive care provider by the Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS).
