Children's speech and language therapy
Our speech and language therapists diagnose and treat speech disorders, communication and swallowing problems in children.
Overview
Our registered speech and language therapists provide a specialist service to children with communication and feeding difficulties.
Our therapist works independently and as part of a team, providing comprehensive assessment and ongoing management of your child's condition.
As the causes behind speech and language problems are often complex and varied, our therapist work closely with other department across the hospital. These include cranifacial, neurodisability, general surgery and audiology.
What happens during therapy?
Our therapists will assess your child’s communication and feeding skills, and send you a full report within five working days.
We’ll let you know the results of the tests, whether your child needs further treatment and how long the treatment might last. If your child would like to have therapy with us, we offer one-to-one therapy sessions with a qualified and experienced speech and language therapist.
We’ll also create a tailored programme for your child to practice at home. If you’d like to help too, we can teach parents strategies and skills to supplement and support your child’s therapy.

If your child needs an interpreter for their treatment, please contact our International Patient Centre. We have a range of interpreters available to help.
Related conditions
We assess and manage children with the following conditions:
- attention and listening difficulties
- autistic spectrum disorder
- eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties
- global developmental delay
- hearing impairment and history of glue ear
- language development (understanding and using language)
- literacy
- speech production difficulties
- social communication difficulties
- stammering and stuttering
- tracheotomy to provide temporary or permanent breathing support
- voice loss or hoarse voice
Please note that we do not provide a paediatric intensive care unit at Cromwell Hospital. However, any deteriorating child will be quickly assessed and stabilised by a Resident Medical Officer (RMO) trained in paediatric intensive care, supported by an on-call Paediatric Intensive Care Consultant, before being transferred to the most appropriate paediatric intensive care provider by the Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS).
