Ultrasound and Vascular ultrasound

Ultrasound scans use high frequency sound waves to create an image of internal organs such as the stomach, heart, tendons, muscles, joints and blood vessels.

Abdominal ultrasound can help to diagnose problems with the liver, pancreas, gallbladder and kidneys, whilst pelvic ultrasound can help to diagnose gynaecogical or bladder problems.

Which types of ultrasound scan are available at Bupa Cromwell Hospital?

At Bupa Cromwell Hospital, different ultrasound scans are used to diagnose different conditions. These can be either:

  • Conventional ultrasound scans; or
  • Vascular ultrasound scans, which use a combination of conventional and 'Doppler' ultrasound to show the speed and direction of blood flow through vessels including veins and arteries

Please note that we do not offer ultrasounds to check foetal development during pregnancy at this hospital.

What is involved?

Our specialist sonographer will start by putting a gel onto your skin, which allows the sound waves to pass from the machine into your body tissue. They will then place a 'wand' on your skin and move it slowly over the area they are examining.

Ultrasounds are completely pain-free, although you may find the gel to be cold. Scans normally take between 30 and 60 minutes and are carried out within our Radiology Department as an outpatient.

Vascular ultrasound scans are always carried out by a specially trained vascular scientist.

Following the scan, a radiologist will then interpret the images and produce a report, which they will send to your GP or consultant. The doctor will then explain the results to you and discuss any treatment you may need.
