Liver surgery

Our liver, colorectal and hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgeons are leaders in their fields, as are our Hepatologists and the Clinical Oncologists connected to our world renowned Cancer Centre.

They work within a multi-disciplinary team that ensures the best possible outcomes for patients, and are supported by expert nursing staff and state of the art operating and treatment facilities.

The diagnosis of hepatitis B or hepatitis C can be distressing, but we offer full investigation and treatment. New treatments for viral hepatitis and hepatitis C offer greatly improved cure rates, and oral therapy for patients with Hepatitis B is now well established as the most effective treatment.

With 24-hour specialist medical officers and critical care support, we are able to deal with all liver emergencies, from acute liver failure to hepato-renal failure and complications of decompensated liver disease, including variceal bleeding.

The availability of a full range of diagnostic tests and quick turnaround of the on-site pathology laboratory ensures effective management, and the hospital is unique in offering access to albumin dialysis and MARS therapy; both are established liver assist devices for patients with liver failure.

HPB surgery often requires the close working of specialist consultants with different disciplines. We offer patients a multi-disciplinary service in the diagnosis and management of benign and malignant diseases affecting the liver, pancreas and biliary tract.

Hepato-pancreato-biliary disorders that can be treated at Bupa Cromwell Hospital include:

  • cystic disease in the liver
  • benign liver lesions
  • primary and secondary liver tumours
  • hilar and perihilar cholangiocarcinoma
  • pancreas and periampullary cancer
  • cystic pancreatic lesions
  • GIST- gastrointestinal stroma tumour.
  • Laparascopic gall bladder surgery

HPB surgery can be complex and, where necessary, patients are looked after in our intensive care unit with specially trained clinical staff.

The Liver and GI Centre works closely with our Cancer Centre.  A multi-disciplinary meeting is regularly conducted, which leads to tailored treatment pathways for patients which allow for less radical surgery, improved outcomes and shorter hospital stays.

Treatments include systemic chemotherapy, radiotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, liver and pancreatic cancer surgery. Palliative care and pain services are also available as required.

Our colorectal specialists also work within the multi-disciplinary team to offer exceptional care and surgical results. Areas of expertise include:

  • Laparoscopic colorectal surgery for diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer
  • treatment of pelvic floor disorders / faecal incontinence
  • treatment of rectal prolapse
  • proctology including state-of-the-art minimally invasive haemorrhoid surgery, and surgery for anal fissure
  • surgery for pilonidal disease
  • endoscopic resection of colorectal polyps, including endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD)
  • transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEMS) for rectal tumours.

We offer keyhole surgery for many procedures and two specialists operate together to ensure the best possible results.
