Respiratory tests

We offer a range of respiratory tests that are designed to measure how well your lungs work.

Each test measures a different aspect of, or action within, the lungs. Your doctor will discuss with you the tests that you need, and what is involved in them.

What types of respiratory tests are available at Cromwell Hospital?

Full Lung Function Test

This term describes a group of tests that are all used to assess different parts of the respiratory system. The tests include:

  • Spirometry - which measures the rate of air flow, and estimates lung size
  • Diffusion Capacities - which measures how well oxygen and other gases can pass into the blood

  • Body Plethysmography – this is also known as the ‘box body test’. It measures lung volume, and how much effort is required for each breath

  • Impulse Oscillometry Test - a breathing analysis test which is suitable for paediatric patients, patients who traditionally find lung function testing difficult and immobile patients. This test involves quiet, relaxed breathing.

Respiratory Muscle Strength

A respiratory muscle strength test is often employed by a clinical if respiratory muscle weakness is suspected, such as patients with structural skeletal abnormalities, weak cough, or known neuromuscular disease.

Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test

This test provides a global assessment of the integrative exercise responses involving the pulmonary, cardiovascular, hematopoietic, neuropsychological, and skeletal muscle systems. It provides clinicians with relevant information to make informed decisions as to the origin of certain conditions (such as with unexplained breathlessness of no obvious cause).

Bronchial Provocation Test

This test is used to help doctors diagnose asthma and allergies. You are asked to breathe in substances that will cause your airways to narrow. This can then help your doctor to diagnose and assess your condition.
